TV Review: Let’s Stay Together…Um Yeah

BET's Let's Stay Together

BET’s new original television show “Let’s Stay Together” starring D-list actors may not be a hit and may see early cancellation. I haven’t looked into the ratings but the scene where Kita Whitemore (played by Erica Hubbard) and Jamal (played by former “Sister, Sister” cast mate RonReaco Lee) form a horrible musical duo because the pianist quit…I was done. I literally could not take the series premiere and wanted to click off after seeing that hot mess…it was sad, not even funny.

The show is about relationships, friendship, parenting, family,  finance, living situations, love, etc. Apparently, the main characters of the story are sexy chocolate sister Stacy (played by Nadine Ellis) and Charles (played by Bert Belasco). I should have guessed from the opening scene that the story was based around their cohabitation and recent engagement but they are boring. They have no chemistry and I kind of felt like she was his mother, not lover.

The most interesting character has to be Tasha (played by Joyful Drake) because she knows what comedic delivery is all about but for the others…where are the actors? 95% of the acting was horrible.  The storyline is not clear and how they are all related is even more vague. None of the actors had chemistry between each other. Everyone except for Kita was extremely reserved in their acting…they did not become who their characters are supposed to be.

Why can’t Jamal afford to send Tasha to the hair salon but they can go out to eat every night? How long is Kita going to be on a “mancation“?  The series premiere did not leave me wanting more. Especially since I did not connect with any of the characters?

Apparently the episode was directed by Kim Fields. This was not her best work!

My advice to BET and the actors is to go back to the drawing board and work on the cohesiveness of the storyline, actors, and presentation. Make me believe that this show is centered around Stacy and Charles and to believe that the entire cast can act and has chemistry.Oh, and fix the hair on Tasha and Kita.

I will continue to watch to see what develops but it’s not looking pretty to me. BET does get an A+ for putting a chocolate sister in the show because we do not see to much of that on TV or anywhere for that matter.

Did you watch BET’s new original show “Let’s Stay Together”? What did you think?

It was in my best interest to skip it. I didn’t want to ruin a great evening.

I did see it but found it hard to keep my attention and the show does need a lot of work. I actually found that scene to be funny, when they joined as a duo…Tasha was probably the most likeable character to me.
I don’t think I will intentionally watch the upcoming shows, maybe I’ll let it rock if there’s nothing else on.
